On January 14, 2024, the team at Hinter Auctions has the distinct honor of offering this rare 1981 Series Excalibur Roadster automobile from our auction premises in Cooroy, on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland.

 

About The Automobile

This Excalibur Roadster Convertible was custom-built by the Excalibur Motor Corporation(USA) in 1981 for the legendary actor and television presenter William Fiore. The body shape of the vehicle is based on the Mercedes Benz SSK and like all of the Excalibur automobiles attention to detail was paramount before the delivery of this luxury convertible roadster.

The vehicle was imported into Australia in 2010 before going through a ground-up restoration by the current owner restoring it to its former glory and honoring this luxury roadster by keeping all of the original detail intact. This gorgeous award-winning Burgundy coloured convertible powered by the 305 Super Pursuit V8 Chevrolet engine is undoubtedly a head-turner as you cruise down the road with the wind in your hair, or in air-conditioned comfort. The choice is yours.

Taking a look inside you will notice luxury details including the electronically adjustable leather seats to the wooden dash panels. Head towards the rear of the vehicle and you will notice the rear dickie seat which is only one of the 48 Excaliburs offered worldwide with the electronically operated version adding to the rarity of this vehicle. The luxury features continue with power steering, power windows, and air-conditioning.

A Brief History of the Excalibur Motor Corporation (USA)

The Excalibur Motor Company, founded in 1964 by Brooks Stevens and associates, holds a revered place in the automotive industry. With a lineage deeply rooted in timeless design, the company introduced its inaugural car, the Excalibur Roadster, in 1965. Infused with meticulous craftsmanship and unwavering attention to detail, Excalibur proudly crafted approximately 3,500 captivating automobiles. Each masterpiece served as a testament to the enduring allure of automotive artistry, created specifically for discerning individuals who sought the perfect fusion of luxurious comfort and exhilarating performance.

As the late 1990s marked the end of Excalibur’s production, the brand’s rich history solidified its standing as a pioneer in revitalizing the spirit of iconic vintage automobiles.

Who Is William Fiore?

William (Bill) Fiore, a highly versatile American television, film, and voice actor with an enduring legacy that continues to captivate audiences. Fiore’s journey in the entertainment industry began with his remarkable debut in the iconic film “The Swimmer” (1968). Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, he also showcased his talent in numerous television commercials, including the famous “Hi, guy!” Right Guard antiperspirant adverts alongside the talented Chuck McCann. Fiore’s voice talent shone through in the video game “Grand Theft Auto III” (2001), where he brought the character Darkel to life.

William (or Bill as he preferred) died on the 3rd of October 2014 and through his legacy continues to leave an indelible mark on the film, television, and advertising industry.

What Is Hammer Price?

What Is Hammer Price?

The “Hammer Price” is so named referring to the final amount bid and called by the auctioneer at the fall of the hammer.

Of course, a gavel or hammer is not always used by the auctioneer to call the final bid. The auctioneer may simply call sold or use other methods such as clapping hands, slapping the leg, using a stick, and so on. Whatever the method used by the auctioneer the final bid is still referred to as the hammer price.

In the world of online auctions, the final closing bid is also referred to as the hammer price.

BUYERS FEES & TAXES

In many auctions including those facilitated by Hinter Auctions, the hammer price does not include fees such as a buyer’s premium and taxes such as GST that may be applicable. These fees (if applicable) are usually added to the hammer price on invoicing. It is worth noting that any additional fees and taxes are added to the hammer price separately and not compounded on top of each other.

For example, if the hammer price is $100 and a 10% BP + 10% GST applies the final invoice amount will be $120.00.

Please note – Under QLD Office of Fair Trading rules any additional fees must be declared prior to the auction or the lot offered. It is the buyer’s responsibility to account for any additional fees when bidding at auction.

SELLERS COMMISSIONS & FEES

A commission is usually charged to the seller and at times additional fees such as listing fees, PPSR checks etc. These fees are deducted from the hammer price.

For example, if the seller’s commission is charged at 10% and a listing fee of $1 applies the settlement amount payable to the seller would equal $89.00.

 A Partial Change of Ownership for Hinter Auctions?

Following the launching and running a successful auction business through the partnership of Richard Hansen and Andy & Nova Flitter the time has come for a partial change of ownership. After some serious deliberation, Andy and Nova have made the decision to exit the auction business to concentrate on other business interests and their plans for overseas travel. The transfer of ownership is effective January 1, 2023.

A Brief Look From Launch to Today

Richard still recalls the time when Andy approached him with the concept of starting an auction business. Whilst Richard had experience with auctions he never thought he would be selling antiques and collectables under the hammer. It soon became apparent that this was a partnership that would work, with Andy’s background in antique and collectables and Richard’s experience behind the microphone. Not only that, they both possessed skills that would truly complement each other.

One thing they both had was the desire for continual improvement and hence many changes were made to facilitate the improvements along the way. One of the biggest changes was the decision to invest in an auction management and online bidding platform. Whilst it was a costly exercise, it was also one that would pay dividends to the auction business. The bidder base immediately grew from the very first auction the new platform was launched.

Richard and Andy launch Hinter Auctions

As the business continued to grow it soon became apparent they had outgrown the premises in which the business was launched hence the move into 13 Jarrah Street, Cooroy where the auction house operates today. Of course, having more room meant more lots being sold each month either through bigger or more auctions. From April 1 until December 31 Hinter Auctions have offered just over 14,800 lots with an average 97% clearance rate.

Of course, some good things must come to an end as Andy and Nova set off to pursue other interests

The Future

With Richard Hansen at the helm as the sole director, he will continue with, and build upon the foundations already laid. The regular “Antique, Vintage and Collectables” auctions will continue on a monthly basis. In the planning stages at the time of writing are some specialty auctions including a Motorcycles and Memorabilia auction and others that are too early to reveal at this time.

Richard sincerely values his friendship and the successful partnership with Andy and Nova and wish them the very best with their future pursuits.

 What are bidding increments and how do I know what they are?

There are various methods by which auctioneers will accept bids at auction. Most chattel auctioneers will accept bids at certain increments and possibly update the amounts as the auction progresses. This post explains the incremental bidding process used by the auctioneers at Hinter Auctions.

What are bidding increments?

Bidding increments are simply the amount the auctioneer will increase the bids during the auction.

As a general rule, the bidding increment will be approximately 10% of what the current bid is. For example, if the bid is currently $200 you may expect the bids to be increased by $20. The auctioneers at Hinter Auctions (and most auction houses) have a set base of increments to work with. These are called number brackets.

Whilst the auction house does have these number brackets to work with they are a guide only and the auctioneer does have full discrepancy as to what the bidding increments should be. The auctioneer may increase or decrease the bidding increments during the auction for various reasons to maintain flow and efficiency.

Below is an example of the Hinter Auctions number brackets.

How do the bidders know what the increment is?

There are 2 answers to this. One for on-site bidders and another for online bidders. As Hinter Auctions often run simulcast auctions (on-site and online) I will answer them both.

On-site Auction Bidders

In a live auction format, the auctioneers will state what the increment is to be. With the fast pace of the usual chattel auction, it is important to listen to what the auctioneer is saying. Auctioneers often have their own unique style of stating the increments. You may hear the auctioneer say something as simple as “$10 bids” or another way of asking for the same increment may be “taking teners”. Another way of stating increments may be in percentages for example the auctioneer may say “1/4 bids now”. The increment in this case would depend on where the bidding is at eg. if bidding is in the hundreds then a 1/4 bid would be $25. If it is in the thousands a 1/4 bid would be $250 and so on.

This may seem a little daunting but if you listen to the auctioneer call a few lots you will soon understand the general bidding increments and how they are called.

Online Auction bidding.

Whether you are bidding online in a live or a timed format the answer is simple and basically the same. On the screen, you will see what the asking bis is, rather than the increment. For example, if the current bid is $50 and the current increment is $10, then displayed on the screen will be the asking bid of $60.

Can a bidder ask the auctioneer to accept a bid out of increment?

A bidder can ask the auctioneer to accept a bid that is out of increment. For example, there is the so-called “killer bid” where a bidder may call for a high bid in an attempt to put off other bidders. The opposite is also true where a bidder may call for a lower increment in an attempt to hopefully secure the item at a lower price.

It is totally up to the auctioneer what bids are accepted. In order to maintain control of the auction the auctioneer may not accept bids that are out of the increment stated.

The main reason Hinter Auctions auctioneers use set number brackets is to keep the process fun and flowing. Most of our auctions contain between 300 – 400 lots and so it is imperative that the sales are conducted in a smooth, flowing, and fun manner.
